Join Lesley Robin in exploring the rural life and traditions of Gujarat & Rajasthan with diverse and exciting textile visits, meeting with Master Craftsmen – tie-dyers, blockprinters, leatherworkers, double ikat weavers – and village people in their homes and workshops. Travel through a landscape of legendary forts, palaces and lively bazaars… an endless pageant of people and color! From Mumbai (Bombay) fly to Bhuj in Kutch (Gujarat) where we base ourselves for several nights and travel off the beaten track with Judy Frater, our personal guide throughout our time in Kutch… visiting desert communities that still maintain their strong traditions and culture where embroidery is a celebration of their everyday lives. Train journey to Ahmedabad to visit the Calico Museum of Textiles, and meet the Salvi family in Patan renowned for their famous “patola” (intricate double ikat). Continue overland into Rajasthan visiting tribal villages where women adorn themselves in traditional clothing & exotic silver jewelry. Stay in an old palace, and at the home of a local noble family… visit a myriad of wonderful sights, including remote Jaisalmer, described as the most perfect jewel shimmering above the hard sand like a fairytale mirage… and Jodhpur on the edge of the Thar Desert. Day 3 Mon, Jan 19: After breakfast we take the mid day flight to Bhuj situated in Kutch (Western Gujarat). On arrival we are met by Judy Frater, author and Trustee of The Kala Raksha Trust. Judy will be our personal guide throughout our visit in Kutch, home to many pastoral communities including the semi-nomadic Rabaris who are camel and sheep herders. Drive to Kutch Safari Lodge, situated in the countryside, our base for the next four nights… simple accommodation in cottages (inspired by the traditional village hut) and with all modern amenities. Day 4 Tue, Jan 20: Over the next few days explore the area and meet with Masters of their crafts. Visit Ali Mohammed Isha at his home & workshop to see “bandhini” tie dye. Explore the old walled city of Bhuj, the bazaars crowded with bicycles, cows and bullock carts, where small shops line the narrow winding streets with colorful clothing and embroidered textiles from outlying villages. Visit Ajrakhpur, a model of self-help among the Khatri community who are traditional block printers and dyers. Ismail Khatri, recipient of national awards for craftsmanship, will demonstrate the complex crafts of double printed “ajrakh” hand blocked cloth and traditional natural dyeing. Day 5 Wed, Jan 21: Travel to the northern region of Kutch to the home of Kala Raksha. See the permanent collection of traditional textiles and learn from Judy about village life in this area, and from village people about their experiences in having become self-sufficient by their involvement in the production, sales and marketing of their exquisite craft. Drive to Banni, the desert grassland bordering the Rann of Kutch where we visit villages of cattle herders and leather workshops, each wearing their distinctive colorful dress and practicing their own traditional style of embroidery. Day 6 Thu, Jan 22: A day in the Southern Region. Travel south to the old port Mandvi. Watch wooden dhows being built in the same simple labor-intensive way they have been for centuries. Visit Kala Raksha’s new design school for artisans and visit the homes of local Rabari embroiderers. Enjoy lunch by the sea. BHUJ – KUTCH SAFARI LODGE (B,L,D)
Day 7 Fri, Jan 23: A full day’s travel by road eastwards across the state of Gujarat to the capital city of Ahmedabad. AHMEDABAD – HOTEL LE MERIDIEN (B,L,D)
Day 8 Sat, Jan 24: Saturday morning visit to the Gandhi Ashram situated on the Sabarmati River. Continue to the Calico Museum of Textiles housed in an old “haveli” (mansion). The collection covers five centuries of the finest textiles that were spun, woven, printed and painted in different parts of India. Afternoon visit the unique Art Book Center specializing in books on Indian art, textiles and culture, followed by visits to some of India’s well-known outlets for handloomed textiles, clothing and furnishings. Days 9, 10 Sun, Mon Jan 25, 26: Start the day with a walk through Old Ahmedabad, meandering through the old streets and lanes with carved wooden historical buildings and local people beginning their day’s activities. Afternoon drive north to Zainabad situated on the edge of the Rann of Kutch. Overnight in simple local-style small thatched stone cottages (all with attached showers). During our stay we take a jeep safari to see the wildlife & birds of the area, visit an encampment of one of the nomadic tribes who winter here, and visit a Rabari village and see embroidered textiles traditional to the region. Day 11 Tue, Jan 27: Depart for the 11th century Sun Temple of Modhera and on to Patan where we visit the Salvi family, traditional weavers of “patola”, the most famous of double ikat weaving. Continue to Palanpur where we overnight in simple accommodation at an old palace of faded splendor situated in traditional Nawabi gardens and surrounded by forests and green hills. Day 12 Wed, Jan 28: Morning drive north into Rajasthan to Syana situated off the beaten track and bordering the Great Thar Desert. We overnight in the countryside with a local noble family who have opened their home to small groups of visitors. Our accommodation is in cottages. Afternoon walk through the delightful small village and local bazaar with merchants selling rainbow colored turbans, traditional shoemakers, a silver & goldsmith. Visit a street of woodcarvers. Evening performance of local music by traditional musicians of the area. SYANA – SYANA GARDEN RETREAT (B,L,D)
Days 13, 14 Thu, Fri Jan 29, 30: Thursday a full day on the road as we drive through the Thar Desert to remote Jaisalmer, formerly an important outpost on the trade routes between India and Central Asia. Friday visit a small Folklore Museum and explore Jaisalmer Fort with its narrow winding streets, beautiful Jain temples and ornate, painted “havelis”, the spectacular 16th century mansions built by wealthy merchants from golden-yellow sandstone. Days 15, 16 Sat, Sun Jan 31, Feb 1: Saturday drive eastwards to Chandelao Garh to enjoy a very personal stay with our host Thakur Pradyuman Singh in his family’s 18th century fort, situated in the middle of a rural village. Late afternoon leisurely walk through the village, this evening we’ll enjoy folk music and traditional dances. Sunday full day visit to nearby villages to see pottery and textiles. Day 17 Mon, Feb 2: After breakfast an hour’s drive to the magnificent 15th century Meherangarh Fort with its superb museum and far-reaching views overlooking the indigo-blue whitewashed city of Jodhpur. Afternoon explore the walled Sardar Bazaar crowded with people, horse driven carts, a market piled high with fruit, vegetables and spices, a maze of alleys and narrow streets with glass bangles and vividly printed fabrics and textiles. Guatemala: Traditional Villages & Handcrafts of the Guatemalan Highlands

Join Tom and Florencio for our 14th journey into the highlands of Guatemala, a land of ancient Maya heritage and stunning natural beauty. This program focuses on the vibrant indigenous culture and traditional handcrafts that have flourished for centuries in the mountainous interior. From the colonial city of Antigua, we travel to the colorful markets of Chichicastenango and the villages surrounding Lake Atitlan. Day 2 Thu, Feb 26: This morning we visit the Ixchel Textile Museum and the Popol Vuh Archaeological Museum with its collection of pre-Columbian pottery. After lunch we drive to the picturesque colonial town of Antigua (5000 ft) surrounded by three volcanoes. Our base for the next six nights, Antigua has been named a Unesco World Heritage Site. Day 3 Fri, Feb 27: Walking orientation as we explore this beautiful historic old town with its cobblestone streets and colonial churches. Visit the remains of the Cathedral, the Colonial Museum and a jade factory. After lunch in a traditional restaurant, we continue our walk to visit the small museums of Pre-Columbian, Glass & Archaeological Art all within the old convent of Santo Domingo. Day 4 Sat, Feb 28: This morning a special talk on weaving techniques by Desiree de Ceballos, owner of Casa de Artes, afterwards a chance to see their collection of masks, ceramics, jewelry and old textiles. Visit the old Convent of Capuchinas and colorful La Merced Church. Lunch at Posada Don Rodrigo, next to the Folk Art shop Nim Pot. After lunch visit La Azotea Cultural Center which includes within the same complex the Coffee Museum, the Casa K’Ojor for preservation of Maya music and instruments, and the Rincon Zacatepequez displaying traditional dress of nearby villages. Day 5 Sun, March 1: Excursion to the beautiful old church of San Francisco which has the image and tomb of Antigua’s strongest devotion, Brother Pedro. From here we visit the small, picturesque market in the village of Santa Maria de Jesus. Continue to the village of Ciudad Vieja, the second capital of Guatemala until it was destroyed by volcanic eruptions in the late 18th century: Here we visit the studio of Maestro Max Galindo, one of the region’s best woodworkers. He will host us for lunch, and afterwards show us his workshop and beautiful wooden art pieces. On our return we stop to visit the small suburb of Jocotenango and the workshop of Maestro Jose Maria Barrios who makes some of the vibrantly colored wooden fruits. Return to Antigua. Day 6 Mon, March 2: Today’s excursion takes us to San Juan Comalapa, famous for its naive painters. We will visit the workshop of Maestro Oscar Peren who is respected in his village for his oils & watercolors. Afterwards we walk through the village to see other artists’ studios. Continue to the ancient Mayan archaeological site of Iximche, Guatemala’s first capital. Return to Antigua, dinner on your own. ANTIGUA – HOTEL AURORA or HOTEL CASA AZUL (B,L)
Day 7 Tue, March 3: This morning we visit Finca Macadamia, a Macadamia nut farm, to see their production of health products. Afterwards visit one of the region’s important weaving villages. ANTIGUA – HOTEL AURORA or HOTEL CASA AZUL (B,L)
Day 8 Wed, March 4: This morning we drive to the village of Chichicastenango located at 6660 ft. After lunch we walk nearby to visit a workshop of mask-makers, and to visit the main plaza for orientation before tomorrow’s grand market day. CHICHICASTENANGO – HOTEL SANTO TOMAS (B,L,D)
Day 9 Thu, March 5: We spend the entire morning enjoying the famous Indian market of Chichicastenango. Lunch in a local restaurant overlooking the market. After lunch we depart for Panajachel, situated on beautiful Lake Atitlan (5100 ft), a caldera lake surrounded by volcanoes. On arrival we visit the studio of quiltmaker Sarah Matzar, and also see a demonstration of traditional weavers from nearby Santa Catarina Palopo. PANAJACHEL – HOTEL ATITLAN (B,L,D)
Day 10 Fri, March 6: This morning a boat ride to two traditional Indian communities around the lake. Beginning with San Antonio Palopo, we visit the studio of Roberto Perez and Marco Antonio Sicay, famous potters of the region who will show us their workshop and techniques. Continue across the lake to the village of Santiago Atitlan, known for its handwoven and heavily embroidered huipiles, and devotion to their pagan saint Maximon. Visit the cathedral and walk the colorful streets before our return boat ride to Panajachel for lunch. The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure for exploring. Dinner on your own. Day 11 Sat, March 7: This morning we drive back to Antigua, on our way stopping at the village of Santo Domingo Xenaco for a demonstration of textiles followed by a presentation of traditional dances. Chiapas, Mexico: Traditional Villages of the Highlands

Join Tom & Florencio for our journey into the highlands of Chiapas, Mexico’s southernmost state. Explore the beautiful colonial city of San Cristóbal de Las Casas and surrounding traditional villages populated by Tzotzil and Tetzal Indians, descendants of the Maya. San Cristóbal de Las Casas is located at about 7400 feet, offering a moderate climate year round with daytime temperatures in the 60s-70s and nighttime temperatures in the 50s. In addition to exploring San Cristobal’s historic colonial center and museums, our days will be filled with excursions into the countryside to visit weekly markets, traditional villages, and to meet local weavers and potters. Continue into the jungle lowlands to visit the ancient Mayan archaeological sites of Tonina and Palenque, with an excursion to Bonampak ruins to see the best-preserved Mayan murals in Mexico. Our journey ends in Villahermosa with a visit to the Olmec archaeological park La Venta.

Days 11, 12 Sat, Sun March 21, 22: Saturday morning we will dedicate to visiting the grand archaeological site of Palenque, one of the most beautiful of Mayan ancient kingdoms. Visit the new museum. The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure for independent activities… return to the nearby ruins, or take a walk in the jungle, or relax and enjoy the hotel grounds and pool. Sunday a full day excursion, as we drive towards the Guatemalan frontier and into the Lacandon jungle area. First a visit to the ancient Maya ruins of Bonampak, known for having the best preserved Mayan murals in Mexico. Afterwards we drive to the nearby Lacandon village of Lacanja for lunch and some time to walk around the village and see their beadwork using natural seeds. Dinner on your own both days. Join Tom & Sherry on our 10th journey through the Ecuadorian Highlands, a land of majestic snow-capped volcanoes, fertile valleys, and a rich tapestry of indigenous cultures. This program focuses on the colorful local markets and traditional handcrafts that have flourished for centuries. Starting in the colonial capital of Quito, we fly south to Cuenca, a UNESCO World Heritage city, to explore its cobblestone streets and visit nearby villages known for ikat weaving and the iconic Panama hat. Our route then takes us north through the “Avenue of the Volcanoes,” staying in historic haciendas. We meet master weavers, embroiderers, and musical instrument makers in their home workshops. A highlight is our stay in the northern highlands near Otavalo, home to one of the most famous indigenous markets in South America. Join Tom & Sherry on our 10th journey exploring the traditional village life and handcrafts of Romania. Our journey focuses on the northern regions of Maramures and Bucovina, where centuries-old traditions are still a part of everyday life. We meet weavers, woodcarvers, potters, and egg painters in their home workshops. At its heart we visit Museum Africa and enjoy a traditional South African lunch. Later meet with a well-known ceramic artist in her gallery featuring superb textiles, beadwork & pottery. Afternoon at leisure to relax. Close to our hotel is the Flea Market where traders from all over Africa sell their handmade crafts. Day 3 Sat, Sept 12: A day on the road as we begin a journey that will take us through small rural towns to Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve. Day 4 Sun, Sept 13: Drive through Mpumalanga and the Panorama Route, a landscape of mountains and passes, valleys and rivers, forests and rock formations. Visit Shangana, a village created by local people to share their heritage. The Shangaan trace their roots back to the Zulu King Shaka. Today they reside in remote villages off the beaten track. Drive to Piggs Peak and visit Coral Stephens weaving workshop, which employs talented local women from the surrounding area and specializes in products made from hand-woven mohair, wool and silk. Later visit Ngwenya Glass factory to see the production of handmade products from recycled glass. Day 8 Thu, Sept 17: We start our day with a visit to a local school. Later visit a Swazi family at their homestead where the grandmother still weaves according to traditions handed down through the generations. Drive to the town of Manzini for the weekly Thursday craft market, an explosion of energy and color which draws rural people from the surrounding area who come to sell their products… woodcarvings, jewelry, traditional Swazi blankets and cloth in bold designs, masks, grass woven baskets as well as household goods and herbal medicines. Afternoon visit an inspiring Fair Trade organization working with rural women combining traditional hand skills with high-end design using local grass fibers, pottery and beadwork. Day 9 Fri, Sept 18: Early start for a full day’s drive to Zululand (KwaZulu-Natal). Overnight in traditional beehive huts (all with modern amenities) crafted by the local community. Day 10 Sat, Sept 19: A two hour drive brings us to Durban, one of the busiest ports in Africa and home to one of the largest communities of Indians outside of India. This non-profit organization provides training and grants for local artists and artisans, helping them promote and sell their handwork of exceptional quality. Dinner on your own. Days 11, 12 Sun, Mon Sept 20, 21: Sunday morning flight to Cape Town and travel to the Cape Winelands. Rugged, blue-tinged mountains form a dramatic backdrop to the surrounding green valleys where charming towns rest among lush vineyards and olive groves with traditional gabled Cape Dutch architecture. Over the next two days our visits include Franschhoek the valley of the French Huguenots and walking tours of historic Stellenbosch and Paarl to see the important sights. While Yugoslavia has now broken up into many countries, we return to explore portions of Serbia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro and Croatia. We begin in Novi Sad, Serbia with its Austro-Hungarian architecture. Visit the homes & studios of naive (primitive) painters in outlying villages near Belgrade. Journey overland into the mountainous regions of Serbia to visit a cooperative of handknitters before we continue into Bosnia & Herzegovina to explore Sarajevo’s oriental bazaar. Visit Mostar with its famous single arch stone bridge before we continue through beautiful mountainous countryside to the lovely walled town of Kotor on the Adriatic coast of Montenegro. Our journey ends with beautiful Dubrovnik on the Adriatic coast of Croatia.

Day 3 Fri, Dec 18: This morning we visit the Mixtec archaeological site of Mitla. Afterwards we continue to the traditional Zapotec village of Teotitlan del Valle to visit with a Zapotec family to see the making of elaborately decorated handmade beeswax candles that are used to decorate their church on festive occasions. We will be hosted for a traditional lunch, and afterwards see their work with handwoven, natural-dyed rugs. On our return to Oaxaca we stop to see a small church in Tlacochahuaya with original murals from the late 16th century painted with natural dyes of the region. Day 4 Sat, Dec 19: This morning an excursion into the South Valley to the Tlapanochestli Cochineal farm. Visit the village of Santo Tomas Jalieza to meet a family weaving with cotton on traditional backstrap looms. Continue to San Martin Tilcajete to visit the famed woodcarvers producing masks and fantastically carved & brightly painted wooden animals. We will be hosted for lunch by a family of woodcarvers. Day 5 Sun, Dec 20: Today’s excursion takes us through the East Valley to an Indian market in the village of Tlacolula. Continue to the bread-making village of Santo Domingo Tomaltepec where traditional egg yolk breads are made for special occasions such as Christmas, Day of the Dead, Easter, and for daily consumption. After lunch we return to Oaxaca City to visit the Museum of Oaxacan Cultures as well as the Santo Domingo Church. This evening we travel to a nearby village to be part of a posada, a festive village procession & fiesta with piñatas, brass band performance, dinner, drinks and a lot of fun. Day 6 Mon, Dec 21: This morning we drive into the West Valley to the oldest pottery village, Santa Maria Atzompa. Meet with Angelica Vasquez, one of the most creative potters in Oaxaca today… her work is based on Oaxacan legends and spiritual experiences using natural colors of clay, earth & minerals as subtle color applications for her unique ceramic sculptures. Continue to San Agustin Etla to visit a nearby handmade paper factory established by the renowned artist Francisco Toledo. On our return to Oaxaca we visit a unique Mixe Indian co-op. Day 7 Tue, Dec 22: Today we return to the South Valley, to the village of San Antonio to meet a family making embroidered clothing. Continue to Ocotlan to visit the workshop of the Aguilar brothers, blacksmiths forging knives and other items. We’ll stop to see the studio of the late Rodolfo Morales before our lunch in the 16th century convent he restored. After lunch we visit the famed Aguilar sisters who make colorful folk pottery. Day 8 Wed, Dec 23: Experience Oaxaca’s unique and traditional cuisine as we take part in a special “hands on” cooking workshop, with lunch at the workshop. The remainder of the afternoon & evening is at leisure to enjoy the Night of the Radishes, a uniquely Oaxacan expression of the Christmas season with an exhibition on the zócalo of elaborate figures sculpted from radishes. Day 9 Thu, Dec 24: Morning excursion to the mountaintop archaeological site of Monte Alban which flourished as a religious, political and commercial center for more than 1200 years. Enjoy a festive “comida” at a traditional Oaxacan ranch. Tonight we walk to the zócalo for a traditional Oaxacan Christmas Eve dinner from where we will see the floats and Christmas parade which enliven this special night. OAXACA – HOSTAL CASANTICA (B,L,D)

Day 11 Sat, Dec 26: Today we drive through the Sierra Madre mountains to Mexico City, stopping at the colonial city of Tlaxcala for lunch. MEXICO CITY – CAMINO REAL HOTEL (B,L,D)
Day 12 Sun, Dec 27: Morning walk to visit the outstanding National Museum of Anthropology. After lunch we drive to the Historic District to visit the National Folk Art Museum. Afterwards visit the small Diego Rivera Museum and the Palacio de Bellas Artes. Dinner in a local restaurant. MEXICO CITY – CAMINO REAL HOTEL (B,L,D)
Day 13 Mon, Dec 28: Today’s visits include the National Palace to see the famous murals painted by Diego Rivera, as well as an overview of the Aztec Templo Major. Enjoy a festive farewell comida/supper. Dinner on your own. MEXICO CITY – CAMINO REAL HOTEL (B,L)
Day 14 Tue, Dec 29: Transfer to the airport is provided for your independent return flight home.
