Description
Overview
A vibrant and expressive Oaxacan alebrije sculpture in the form of a dragon-serpent, likely originating from the copal wood carving and polychrome painting tradition of the Oaxacan valley. Alebrijes are fantastical folk art creatures combining elements of multiple animals, closely associated with the Zapotec communities of Oaxaca and among the most recognized expressions of Mexican folk art worldwide.
Design & Craftsmanship
Function & Form: The figure stretches approximately 24 inches in length, carved from a single piece of copal wood in a sinuous serpentine form. The body references both serpentine and dragon morphology, with a distinctive crenellated castle-form dorsal spine running the full length of the back. Decorative elements including the spine, horns, and appendages are applied and adhered to the carved body. The piece stands freestanding on four carved feet.
Artistry & Ornamentation: The surface is hand-painted in bold polychrome — a yellow-orange ground with multicolor spot patterning consistent with jaguar markings, a common motif in Oaxacan alebrije decorative vocabulary. The head features an open mouth with red interior, multi-spike black horn array, and multicolor feather or fin elements at the neck. Colors remain vivid and well-preserved throughout.
Structural Base: Freestanding on four carved feet; no separate base. Hand-tool carving marks visible consistent with traditional copal wood production.
