Overview

This small handwoven wool flatweave panel is likely from Romania’s Transylvania/Bucovina region, a folk weaving tradition in which village women wove pictorial “scoarta” panels for display in the home’s guest room. The central motif — a village church with an onion-domed bell tower — is consistent with this regional tradition of commemorating a local landmark church in woven form. Provenance research suggests a possible connection to Craft World Tours’ December 2006-January 2007 Romania and Maramures Winter Festival program, which traveled through Bucovina and visited a weaver contact in Avrig village, Transylvania.

Design & Craftsmanship

• Artistry & Ornamentation: The central field depicts a church and bell tower flanked by columns of stylized fir trees; surrounding panels contain eight-pointed star medallions, geometric diamond “eye” motifs, folk figures in traditional dress, and a mountain-village silhouette panel, all in a palette of olive, rust, cream, and brown wool.
• Structural Base: Finished with a woven diamond-pattern border and fringed edges on the sides; no maker’s mark or inscription observed on the reverse.
