The origin is not documented; the carved form is reminiscent of folk wooden bowls and bateas produced across Mexico, Central America, and parts of Asia, while the surface treatment suggests a 20th-century decorative or studio hand. Function & Form: A single-piece carved hardwood bowl, likely originally utilitarian, measuring approximately 18 in across the bowl (20.5 in including the rim tabs), 4 in tall, with an interior depth of about 3.25 in. A small rim lug sits to each side. A drilled hole near the rim and a triangular metal tab set into the back indicate it was fitted for vertical wall display rather than table use.
Artistry & Ornamentation: The interior is worked in a raised, trailed relief technique — a piped or applied paste forming rounded ridges that stand proud of the surface, highlighted in coppery-terracotta tones with green and yellow material worked into the recesses, all over a dark green-black ground. Dotted textures, fine parallel strokes, and clustered oval seed or grain forms complete a loose, painterly composition. The handling is expressive and individual, suggesting an artist’s hand rather than a repeating workshop pattern.
Structural Base: The underside is left raw, with hand-adzed tool facets radiating from a slightly recessed central foot fitted with a small metal tab. No maker’s marks, stamps, or signatures are present on the piece.
