This primitive textile tool was acquired in the 2000s during the Craft World Tours expeditions through the historic crafting villages of Romania and Hungary. Featuring a horizontal bench profile, heavily turned baluster posts, and a multi-spoke drive wheel, this turn-of-the-century artifact is rich with rustic character. It is offered in its current state, making it an exceptional folk-art display piece or a highly rewarding structural restoration project for historical fiber arts enthusiasts.

Design & Craftsmanship

Style & Architecture: Designed in the classic horizontal Saxony configuration, this piece features a robust three-legged tripod bench base. The architectural wood-turning on the upright supports and legs highlights traditional Carpathian regional styles.
Folk Art Details: The outer rim face of the large drive wheel features concentric grooved scoring details—a classic, functional folk-art touch common in village-made European textile equipment.
Materials: Constructed entirely from a dense, seasoned hardwood finished with a warm, historic reddish-brown stain that has worn down beautifully over more than a century of use. The primary wheel axle is fitted with a rugged, hand-forged iron drive crank.

Condition Report & Technical Notes

This item is offered as a historical artifact/restoration project and will be disassembled into its individual structural components for safe shipping. Close inspection reveals specific structural points of interest:

Tensioning Mechanism: The large, horizontally turned wooden handle extending from the end of the bench functions as a wooden tension screw. Turning this handle successfully moves the internal wooden block along the internal thread mechanism inside the bench slot.
Structural Damage Notes:
- Split Base Collar: The circular wooden base collar (the mother-of-all base support) built around the vertical spinning assembly post is completely split and broken in half. This is the primary structural issue to address for restoration, as it stabilizes the upright assembly against operational torque.
- Component Assessment: The internal square wooden block and its integrated turned upright support post are present and intact. The open circular channel visible inside the block is the threaded path designed to receive the long tension screw.
- Bench Features: A clean, open circular hole drilled through the bench platform remains ready to hold an additional vertical support post (maiden) or a distaff attachment for holding unspun fiber.
Completeness: Major primary structural elements are present (bench body, legs, treadle assembly base, drive wheel, wooden axle brackets, tension screw, and the flyer support block assembly). It is missing its original leather or cord drive bands, and portions of the flyer/distaff assembly may be incomplete or broken.
