Description

Product Overview This stunning vintage vessel is a premier example of the ceramic artistry from Safi, Morocco’s historic “City of Potters.” It features a traditional hand-thrown earthenware body adorned with a signature multi-tonal glaze, entirely encased in an intricate, hand-wrought metal filigree overlay.

Artisanship & Detail

  • Metalwork: The jar is embellished with Meskoum (nickel-silver or “German silver”) filigree. This traditional North African metalwork is hand-applied, forming a structural cage of geometric lattices and floral rosettes that wrap the ceramic body.

  • Glaze & Palette: The pottery beneath the metalwork displays the characteristic Safi polychrome palette—deep blues, vibrant yellows, and soft teals—arranged in classical Moroccan motifs.

  • Condition: Excellent vintage condition. The metal overlay is secure with a rich, authentic patina. The ceramic remains intact beneath the filigree with no visible structural cracks.

Condition Note & Collection Disclaimer

This is a vintage artifact offered in “As-Is” condition. Please note the following specifics regarding its vintage character:

  • Metal Filigree: Due to the age and handmade nature of the Meskoum overlay, there may be minor breaks, slight lifting, or missing fragments in the delicate metal wirework.

  • General Wear: Expect a natural aged patina on the metal and potential minor glaze skips or surface wear on the pottery.

Cultural Significance Safi pottery is distinguished by this unique marriage of earth and metal. While most Moroccan pottery relies on painted decoration, this style requires a dual-mastery: the skill of the potter to create the form and the precision of the metalworker to “fit” the filigree shroud. It is a highly collectible representation of Maghrebi craft heritage.
