The piece is unsigned, so the maker’s identity is not confirmed; the surface treatment and techniques are consistent with the broader American studio-craft raku movement rather than any single documented workshop or region.

Design & Craftsmanship

Function & Form: A closed, heavy, thick-walled ovoid vessel narrowing to a small, raw-edged opening at the apex — a decorative rather than functional form, not intended to hold liquid. At roughly 16 lbs for a 15.5″ piece, the wall thickness and clay body are substantial, consistent with a heavier stoneware or earthenware base rather than a thin-shell raku form.
Artistry & Ornamentation: The crown is finished in a glossy cream crackle glaze with fine, dark, feathered carbon-trail lines, consistent with horsehair-raku firing, where hair or similar material is laid onto the piece straight from the kiln and burns into the glaze. Below this, a soft rose/tan transitional band gives way to a finely combed, hand-scored hatch-texture line — a deliberate tool-worked decorative band rather than a firing artifact. The lower body carries a distinct mosaic-tile-style belt of individually scored segments finished in a mottled turquoise and copper-green reactive glaze.
Structural Base: A heavy, unglazed, smoke-blackened base consistent with naked-raku reduction technique. No maker’s mark, incised signature, or stamp is present anywhere on the piece — confirmed by close inspection under bright light and by video review of a full rotation of the object.
