Overview
Oaxacan green-glazed folk pottery pitcher in the “loza verde” tradition most closely associated with Santa María Atzompa, a village near Oaxaca City producing green lead-glazed earthenware since pre-Hispanic times. Craft World Tours documented dedicated Oaxaca-focused journeys, including a December 2007 “Christmas in Oaxaca” trip noting a visit with Oaxacan “pottery sisters,” and an earlier 2003 Oaxaca itinerary with a ceramic-artisan workshop visit.
Design & Craftsmanship
Function & Form: Hand-thrown pitcher/jarrito, partial glaze at rim/neck/handle only, lower body left unglazed. 6″H x 5″W, opening approx. 3.5″.
Artistry & Ornamentation: Green lead-glaze splashed at rim, neck, and handle; cream slip-trailed dot-circle floral band at the shoulder over exposed red terracotta.
Structural Base: Unglazed base with visible throwing marks and a hand-inscribed mark, likely a collection or workshop notation, not deciphered.
Condition Report
Surface Condition: No visible chips or cracks; expected mineral staining to the unglazed lower body consistent with age and use.
