Overview
A hand-thrown, salt-glazed stoneware utility jug likely produced by a regional Northeast pottery in the late 19th century. The ovoid form and applied strap handle are typical of American household and commercial jugs of the period, used to store and transport liquids such as vinegar, cider, or spirits.
Design & Craftsmanship
- Function & Form: Single applied strap handle; narrow pouring neck; ovoid body. Measures 14.5″H x 9″D and weighs approximately 10 lbs.
- Artistry & Ornamentation: Buff salt-glazed stoneware body decorated with iron-oxide slip-trail “bee sting” accent marks on the shoulder, a simple non-cobalt embellishment common on utilitarian American stoneware of this era. No cobalt decoration is present.
- Structural Base: Flat, unglazed base with no visible maker’s mark or pottery stamp.

- Surface Condition: Surface shows scattered age-consistent wear and minor surface marks typical of a piece of this age.
