Description

Overview

A large, impressive hand-thrown studio art pottery charger in iron-rich, high-fire reduction stoneware, measuring about 19.5 inches across. The warm reddish-brown field breaks to an olive-green ash-glaze accent at the rim, with a darker iron-saturated, speckled pool at the center and bold throwing rings spiraling the surface — the work of a skilled but unidentified studio potter, whose incised cursive signature and brushed iron-oxide mark appear on the base. It is offered as-is, with a through-crack noted below, as a decorative or display piece, from the studio inventory as part of Tour World Crafts.

Design & Craftsmanship

  • Function & Form: A substantial wheel-thrown charger or low platter, approximately 19.5 in in diameter, 4.25 in tall, 3.5 in deep, and heavy at about 14 lb, with prominent spiral throw ridges across the interior.
  • Artistry & Ornamentation: An iron-rich reduction glaze gives a warm reddish-brown surface with a darker, speckled iron-saturated center and a glossy olive-green ash-glaze break at the rim, characteristic of high-fire or wood/gas reduction studio work.
  • Structural Base: Warm tan-brown stoneware with a wide recessed foot, marked with an incised cursive signature and a brushed iron-oxide gestural mark by an unidentified studio ceramicist.

Condition Report

  • Surface Condition: The glaze is intact, with the natural variation, iron speckling, and central glaze pooling expected of reduction firing.
  • Structural Integrity: There is a single hairline crack running fully through the body from the rim edge to the center, visible on both the interior and the underside. The piece is intact and holds together but is structurally compromised and is intended for decorative or display use, not for food or liquid. A faint possible line is present on the underside outer base ring with no corresponding mark on the interior. This item is sold “as-is” with all associated patina, wear, and the noted crack, inherent to its age and history as part of the Tour World Crafts collection.
