Overview

This is a hand-carved wooden bread trough (Romanian: covata), traditionally used for kneading dough, carved from a single block of wood with winged carrying handles at each end. The piece is signed “N. Popa” on the exterior wall. This is attributed to Nicolae Popa (1919-2010) of Tarpesti, in Romania’s Neamt County, a renowned folk craftsman, poet, and founder of the Popa folk museum, based on the carved signature together with the Wilsons’ own documented personal acquaintance with the artist during their travels in Romania.

Design & Craftsmanship

• Function & Form: Oval trough form with flared winged handles at both ends for carrying; approximately 12″L x 5″W.
• Artistry & Ornamentation: Chip-carved triangular sawtooth border around the bowl rim; lattice/diamond chip-carved motif on each handle, in the traditional Carpathian geometric carving vocabulary.
• Structural Base: Carved from a single block of wood; “N. POPA” signature carved into the exterior wall.

• Surface Condition: Age-appropriate wear and darkening consistent with use and age; no significant losses to the carved decoration.
