Description

Overview

This matched pair of decorative wooden spoons was hand-carved in Romania and is directly dated by an inked inscription on the back of each handle: “Romania – 2005.” The carving style and vocabulary are consistent with the Maramures/Bucovina chip-carving tradition documented on multiple Craft World Tours itineraries through the region.

Design & Craftsmanship

  • Function & Form: Each spoon has a shallow heart-shaped bowl (not intended for food use), a carved neck band, a distinctive S-curve (serpentine) waist, a second carved band, and a pierced diamond-shaped finial with a hanging hole. Approximately 11.5″ long each.
  • Artistry & Ornamentation: Fine chip-carved crosshatch and geometric notching runs the length of each handle, echoing the rope-twist and rosette motifs typical of Maramures woodcarving.
  • Structural Base: Carved from a light-toned hardwood, likely linden or beech. Both spoons are hand-inscribed “Romania – 2005” on the reverse.

Condition Report

  • Surface Condition: Excellent, with light handling wear consistent with age; no cracks or losses noted.
  • Structural Integrity: Stable and structurally sound on both pieces. This item is sold “as-is” with all associated patina and wear inherent to its age and history as part of the Craft World Tours Collection.
