Scandinavian Carved Wooden Mangle Board, Scroll Handle with Carved Heart

Description

Overview

This is a carved wooden Scandinavian mangle board (mangletre/manglebrev), a traditional Norwegian, Swedish, or Danish household implement historically used with a rolling pin to smooth linen before electric irons, and frequently given as an engagement or wedding gift. This piece is not linked to any documented Craft World Tours itinerary; its identification and dating are based on visual analysis of the piece itself.

Design & Craftsmanship

• Function & Form: A flat paddle board with a long handle that ends in a carved scroll; handle and board are one piece. The lower edge of the paddle is notched along its length. Approximately 12.5″ long overall.
• Artistry & Ornamentation: Low-relief carving across the paddle, including a clearly carved heart. The rest of the design is stylized and open to interpretation. No painted decoration.
• Structural Base: Solid carved wood, a single piece.

Condition Report

• Surface Condition: Consistent with age; no cracks noted. Absence of painted decoration or a carved date/initials suggests a 20th-century artisan piece rather than a documented 18th/19th-century antique.
• Structural Integrity: Stable and structurally sound. This item is sold “as-is” with all associated patina and wear inherent to its age and history as part of the Craft World Tours Collection.
