Description

Overview

A hand-carved ceremonial wood spoon by Nicolae (Neculai) Popa (1919-2010) of Tarpesti, Romania, a larger and more elaborate companion to SKU CWT-RO-2008-139. Same documented Craft World Tours provenance: acquired during Tom and Sherry Wilson’s December 2008 Winter Traditions of Romania tour, which records meeting the artist personally.

Design & Craftsmanship

  • Function & Form: Full handle covered in dense, scale-like diamond chip-carved texture running the entire length, terminating in a stylized open-beaked bird-head finial with an inset dark eye. Oval bowl with toothed rim carving and a carved rosette medallion at the handle join. Measures 22.5″L, weight 1 lb.
  • Artistry & Ornamentation: Continuous fish-scale/serpent-skin style chip-carving down the full handle length represents significantly more carving time than a standard Popa spoon. Signed “N. POPA” carved into the bowl exterior.
  • Structural Base: Single piece of solid carved wood.

Condition Report

  • Surface Condition: Consistent with genuine age and hand-tool carving; unvarnished natural finish.
  • Structural Integrity: Stable and structurally sound. This item is sold “as-is” with all associated patina and wear inherent to its age and history as part of the Craft World Tours Collection.
