Description
Overview
A large ceremonial bowl hand-carved from a single block of wood, with a standing human face rising at each end. Carved in the tradition of the Romanian covată (dough trough) and boldly incised “N POPA” beneath the rim, the piece is consistent with the work of Nicolae (Neculai) Popa (1919–2010) of Târpești, Neamț County, Romania, a celebrated naive sculptor, mask-maker and founder of a village ethnographic museum. It likely dates to the late 20th century and comes from The Craft World Tours Collection, whose Romania itineraries included visits with Popa.
Design & Craftsmanship
- Function & Form: Deep pointed-oval bowl, approximately 18″ long head to head; knife-faceted underside resolving to a flat base so it sits level; the two heads serve as handles.
- Artistry & Ornamentation: Each head a mask-like face with peaked cap, drilled ringed eyes, long wedge nose and slit mouth over a deep chip-carved zigzag collar; the faces differ subtly in expression; incised hair lines on the backs. Notched sawtooth rim echoed by an inner band of zigzag chip carving.
- Structural Base: “N POPA” incised under the rim between carved guide lines (N cut reversed).
Condition Report
- Surface Condition: Dark streak across the bowl floor, likely old staining or darkening from use; possible fine surface check along the grain at its center; possible minor chip at one collar. Light handling wear overall.
- Structural Integrity: Appears stable and sound. This item is sold “as-is” with all associated patina and wear inherent to its age and history as part of the Craft World Tours Collection.
