Description
Overview
A sculptural serpent spoon hand-carved from a single piece of wood, the handle carved as a scaled snake body terminating in an open-beaked bird head. Attributed to Nicolae (Neculai) Popa (1919–2010) of Târpești, Neamț County, Romania, a celebrated naive sculptor and founder of a village ethnographic museum; the carving is consistent with his signed ceremonial spoons. It likely dates to the late 20th century and comes from The Craft World Tours Collection, whose Romania itineraries included visits with Popa.
Design & Craftsmanship
- Function & Form: Decorative ceremonial spoon, approximately 16″ long; the hooked beak doubles as a hanger; deep plain pointed-oval bowl at the other end.
- Artistry & Ornamentation: Handle carved as a snake body in rows of deeply cut interlocking diamond scales, framed by diamond-carved collar blocks, with a plain neck ring behind the head. Drilled ringed eye with dark center on each side; incised lines at the jaw. Smooth knife-faceted bowl back.
- Structural Base: Signed per inventory records; a small incised mark appears on the side of the jaw.
Condition Report
- Surface Condition: Small nicks or losses at the lower jaw tip, a light scuff on the crown, and faint staining in the bowl; scale carving remains crisp. Likely light handling wear overall.
- Structural Integrity: Appears stable and whole. This item is sold “as-is” with all associated patina and wear inherent to its age and history as part of the Craft World Tours Collection.
