Description
Overview
A short figural ladle hand-carved from a single piece of wood, incised “N POPA” on the underside of the bowl. The piece is consistent with the work of Nicolae (Neculai) Popa (1919–2010) of Târpești, Neamț County, Romania, a celebrated naive sculptor and founder of a village ethnographic museum. It likely dates to the late 20th century and comes from The Craft World Tours Collection, whose Romania itineraries included visits with Popa.
Design & Craftsmanship
- Function & Form: Decorative ladle or scoop, approximately 14″ long, about 14 oz, with a large, thickly carved oval bowl and a short handle ending in a mask-like head.
- Artistry & Ornamentation: Clean-shaven head with domed cap, ringed eyes with dark centers, wedge nose and slit mouth; notched brow and ear discs on the back. A compact chip-carved diamond collar joins head to bowl. The bowl rim is notched all around, with a sawtooth chip-carved border just inside it. Likely a pale hardwood.
- Structural Base: Rests on the faceted back of the bowl; “N POPA” incised there with an underline.
Condition Report
- Surface Condition: Minor edge losses and raised splinters along the notched rim, mostly near the handle junction; tool facets inside the bowl and light wear consistent with age and handling.
- Structural Integrity: Appears solid and stable. This item is sold “as-is” with all associated patina and wear inherent to its age and history as part of the Craft World Tours Collection.
