Description
Overview
A chip-carved wooden lidded canister in the form of a traditional Carpathian hanging salt box, likely Romanian and likely late 20th century. From the Craft World Tours Collection; consistent with the Craft World Tours Romania programs, whose itineraries record repeated visits with village woodcarvers in Transylvania and Maramureș.
Design & Craftsmanship
- Function & Form: 9" high and 5" in diameter. A cylindrical canister hollowed from a single log section with a separate inset base disc. A tall flat back tab, with a hexagonal top, sawtooth edges and a pierced diamond window, lets it hang from a wall peg. The lift-off lid is notched to clear the tab and sits on an inner shoulder, with a turned acorn-shaped finial.
- Artistry & Ornamentation: Deep, crisp chip-carving. The lid carries a sunburst of radiating gouge cuts framed by rings of triangles, diamonds and a rope edge. The body has a lattice border, a herringbone band, a main frieze of four-petal star-in-diamond rosettes, a running link band and a row of sawtooth V cuts above a plain lower body. Fine-grained fruitwood or linden with a warm natural finish.
- Structural Base: Inset base disc carrying a faint, partially legible pencil inscription.
Condition Report
- Surface Condition: A vertical drying crack runs up the lower body from the base edge, with hairline separation at the base-disc seam and a small check at the rim. The carving itself is crisp, with no losses.
- Structural Integrity: Sound and usable; the lid fits well. This item is sold “as-is” with all associated patina and wear inherent to its age and history as part of the Craft World Tours Collection.
