Description

Overview
Antique American salt-glazed stoneware crock stamped “E & L P NORTON / BENNINGTON VT” with cobalt-highlighted “2” gallon capacity mark — the Norton family pottery of Bennington, Vermont, one of the best-documented American stoneware makers of the 19th century. This specific “E & L.P. Norton” partnership mark dates to circa 1861–1881.

Design & Craftsmanship
Function & Form: Cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder rings and applied lug/ear handles. 9″H x 10″ diameter, 2-gallon capacity.
Artistry & Ornamentation: Cobalt-blue slip-trailed floral spray with dotted trail accents, a standard Norton decorative motif.
Structural Base: Unglazed footring, buff-tan salt-glazed stoneware body.

Condition Report
Surface Condition: A small chip is visible to the rim edge, and lighter spots on the decorated area may be minor glaze loss or flaking; a fine line near the “2” capacity mark should be checked in hand to confirm whether it is a true hairline or a surface shadow.
Structural Integrity: Please confirm the rim chip and possible hairline in hand before finalizing condition grading. This item is sold “as-is” with all associated patina and wear inherent to its age and history.
