Description

Overview

This is a traditional Cambodian carved wooden cow bell, hand-hollowed from a single block of teak. Bells of this type were worn around the necks of grazing cattle or water buffalo so herders could track animals by sound across open or forested terrain. This example has multiple wooden strip clappers suspended inside the hollow chamber, producing a distinctive rattle rather than a single tone.

Design & Craftsmanship

  • Function & Form: Boat-shaped hollowed wood bell body with a braided natural fiber cord collar for attachment; multiple Wooden strip clappers inside the resonance chamber.
  • Artistry & Ornamentation: Simple carved lines along the exterior ridge; natural wood grain finish.
  • Structural Base: Solid hollowed teak body with cord attachment points carved into the sides.

Condition Report

  • Surface Condition: Age-appropriate wear and patina to the wood surface, consistent with use.
  • Structural Integrity: Stable and intact; cord collar intact. This item is sold “as-is” with all associated patina and wear inherent to its age and history as part of the Craft World Tours Collection.
