Description

Overview This is a hand-made shyrdak, the stitched mosaic felt carpet of Central Asia’s nomadic Kyrgyz and Kazakh peoples (Kazakh: syrmak). It was acquired through Craft World Tours, which led craft journeys along the Silk Route to visit village feltmakers. The rug was found with a handwritten Craft World Tours note identifying it as a Central Asian felt rug. It was likely made by Kyrgyz or Kazakh artisans, probably in the late 20th century.

Design & Craftsmanship

  • Function & Form: This is a large floor or wall felt, approximately 96″ long by 57″ wide, about 8′ x 4’9″. Shyrdaks were traditionally laid in yurts and homes as floor coverings and insulation. At this size, it also works as a dramatic wall hanging.

  • Artistry & Ornamentation: Two contrasting felt layers are cut through together and the pieces swapped, so each color carries the other’s negative shape. The central field holds two panels of paired scrolling medallions in purple and orange. They sit inside a sawtooth band of orange and red outlined in green cord. The wide outer border carries red hooked scrolls of the “ram’s horn” type on charcoal grey. Two opposite corners hold small magenta and green inset pieces. Every seam is outlined with couched wool cord, and the outer edge is bound with a twisted red-and-yellow striped cord.

  • Structural Base: The back is a heavy layer of undyed brown wool felt, quilted all over with dense hand stitching that follows the front pattern. A central joining seam runs across the width where the two halves of the rug meet.

Condition Report

  • Surface Condition: Colors remain strong and saturated on the front. The back shows a paler, worn strip at one end, consistent with long use in one position. There is light surface lint and loose fiber from storage, along with gentle edge undulation typical of hand-made wet felt.

  • Structural Integrity: The felt remains dense and the quilting intact. This item is sold “as-is” with all associated patina and wear inherent to its age and history as part of the Craft World Tours Collection.
