Overview
An authentic piece of Romanian folk pottery from the Colibaba family workshop of Rădăuți, Bucovina — a five-generation lineage of master potters celebrated for preserving Byzantine-influenced, Neolithic-rooted design traditions in northern Romania. This small pitcher carries the family’s incised cursive signature, “Colibaba,” on the unglazed base.

Design & Craftsmanship
– Function & Form: Small hand-thrown pitcher/jug form, approximately 5.25″H x 4.5-4.75″W (including handle) x 2.5″ base diameter, single loop handle, pouring spout.
– Artistry & Ornamentation: Executed in the classic Kuty-style sgraffito slipware technique — a white clay slip applied over the red earthenware body, fine outline patterns incised through the slip to expose the darker clay beneath, then hand-painted in the signature Kuty polychrome palette of amber yellow, emerald green, and manganese brown over a cream ground, finished with a clear glaze firing. The banded collar and repeating arched motif reflect traditional seasonal symbolism associated with this regional style.
– Structural Base: Cursive incised “Colibaba” signature on the unglazed base, consistent with authenticated workshop pieces.

Condition Report
– Surface Condition: Age-consistent glaze crazing and minor firing blemishes around the rim, typical of vintage hand-thrown earthenware.
– Structural Integrity: A continuous hairline structural fracture runs from the pour spout through the collar and along the side of the vessel’s belly. Due to this fracture, the piece is best kept as a dry decorative collectible rather than a functional liquid pitcher.
