Overview
Hand-built, lidded terracotta casserole/tureen in the form of a nesting hen, in the traditional Tonala/San Pedro Tlaquepaque pottery style of Jalisco, Mexico. Unglazed and fire-clouded rather than painted, this piece leans toward the more rustic/utilitarian end of that pottery tradition.
Design & Craftsmanship
Function & Form: Lidded casserole/tureen with the hen’s body forming the bowl, a modeled head at one end and tail/wing flare at the other, and a domed lid with a loop handle standing in for the hen’s back.
Artistry & Ornamentation: Incised feather/leaf decoration on the body, scalloped rim edge where lid meets body, heavy natural black fire-clouding across the terracotta surface.
Structural Base: Underside carries a partially legible inscribed inventory mark (“EU-C-168” as best read); origin/meaning of this mark not fully confirmed.
Condition Report
Surface Condition: Fire-clouding is a natural firing characteristic, not damage; no chips or cracks visible.
