Description
Overview: A hand-cast bell in the Dhokra tradition of lost-wax brass casting, produced by tribal artisan communities of central and eastern India — likely Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, or Odisha. Dhokra metalwork is among the oldest non-ferrous metal casting traditions in the world, practiced by the Dhokra Damar tribes. Design & Craftsmanship — Function & Form: A functional bell form approximately 8 inches in overall height, with intact original iron clapper producing a clear tone. The clay core used in the lost-wax process is confirmed present, consistent with authentic Dhokra production rather than later commercial reproduction. Artistry & Ornamentation: The finial is cast in the form of a sun wheel or solar disc — a common motif in Dhokra iconography referencing solar deities and fertility symbolism. The surface retains the characteristic rough-textured, golden-brown patina of hand-cast Dhokra bronze. Structural Base: Cast loop suspension ring at top; no base — intended as a hanging bell. Condition Report — Surface Condition: Natural oxidized patina consistent with age; surface texture inherent to lost-wax production process. Structural Integrity: Bell and clapper intact and functional. This item is sold as-is with all associated patina and wear inherent to its age and history as part of the Craft World Tours Collection.
