Description
Overview
This is a carved wooden Scandinavian mangle board (mangletre), the same functional folk-art category as a companion piece from this shoot but a larger and more elaborately carved example, with an all-over geometric surface and a traditional two-piece slot-and-peg handle construction. This piece is not linked to any documented Craft World Tours itinerary; its identification is based on visual analysis of the piece itself.
Design & Craftsmanship
- Function & Form: A flat paddle-shaped board, rounded at the working end, entirely covered in compass-drawn chip-carved rosettes, interlocking circles, quatrefoils, and diamond fill patterns; a separate turned wooden handle with a round peg inserts into a slot cut in the board. Approximately 18″ long (board only).
- Artistry & Ornamentation: Dense, all-over geometric chip-carving in the classic Scandinavian folk-carving vocabulary; no painted rosemaling.
- Structural Base: Solid carved wood board with a separate turned handle piece.
Condition Report
- Surface Condition: Consistent with age; no cracks noted. Absence of a carved date/signature or painted decoration suggests a decorative/artisan piece rather than a documented antique.
- Structural Integrity: Board and handle are both stable and structurally sound; handle is a separate fitted piece by original design, not a repair. This item is sold “as-is” with all associated patina and wear inherent to its age and history as part of the Craft World Tours Collection.
