Overview
This is a carved wooden Scandinavian mangle board (mangletre), a large and elaborately carved example with an all-over geometric surface, carved from a single board. This piece is not linked to any documented Craft World Tours itinerary; its identification is based on visual analysis of the piece itself.
Design & Craftsmanship
- Function & Form: A flat paddle-shaped board, rounded at the working end, entirely covered in compass-drawn chip-carved rosettes, interlocking circles, quatrefoils, and diamond fill patterns. The opposite end narrows, with a notch cut into each side, and is part of the same board; there are no separate or attached parts. Approximately 18″ long.
- Artistry & Ornamentation: Dense, all-over geometric chip-carving in the classic Scandinavian folk-carving vocabulary; no painted rosemaling.
- Structural Base: Solid carved wood, a single piece with no attached parts.
Condition Report
