Description
Original oil on masonite painting by Marcial Camilo Ayala, a Nahua folk artist from San Agustin Oapan in the Rio Balsas valley, Guerrero, Mexico. Signed and dated “Marcial Camilo – 82.” Depicts a village genre scene: a woman tending a large clay cooking vessel over an open fire, children gathering greens and firewood, thatched-roof structures, a tree, and a lean white dog. Camilo began as a street artist painting amates before being discovered by American collector Edmund Rabkin in Taxco in 1972; he and his brothers Juan and Felix Camilo Ayala became recognized folk artists by the late 1970s, with works now tracked at auction and held in gallery collections (ZQ Art Gallery; Artnet, Artprice, askART). Framed in a black wood frame with gold-toned inner lip, wired for hanging. Acquired during Tom and Sherry Wilson’s personal travels; part of the Craft World Tours Collection. Sold as-is with all associated patina and wear.
