Overview
A hand-carved ceremonial wood spoon by Nicolae (Neculai) Popa (1919-2010), a celebrated Romanian naive folk sculptor from Tarpesti, Neamt County, whose carving style drew on Neolithic archaeological finds excavated near his home village. Popa founded a private ethnographic museum at his house in the 1970s and became a nationally recognized figure in Romanian folk art. This piece carries documented Craft World Tours provenance: Tom and Sherry Wilson’s “Winter Traditions of Romania and the Maramures Winter Festival” tour (December 2008-January 2009) explicitly records meeting folk artist Nicolae Popa during the Bucovina leg of the trip.

- Function & Form: Anthropomorphic ancestor-figure handle with inset dark bead eyes, leading to an oval bowl. Measures approximately 14″ across, weight 12 oz.
- Artistry & Ornamentation: Chip-carved diamond/triangle banding at the neck; matching chip-carved zigzag border around the bowl rim exterior. Signed “N. POPA” carved into the bowl exterior.
- Structural Base: Single piece of solid carved wood.
