Overview
This is a small vintage stuffed cotton folk-art toy, likely depicting a donkey or horse, handmade in Rajasthan, India. It is consistent with the well-known genre of mirror-work textile animal toys produced by artisan communities in the Gujarat (Kutch) and Rajasthan regions, closely tied to Rabari and related pastoral-community textile traditions.
Design & Craftsmanship
- Function & Form: A stuffed cotton body pieced from scrap fabric, standing on four legs, with twisted-fabric ears and an elongated muzzle. Approximately 9-10″ tall including ear tufts, 6-7″ long nose to tail.
- Artistry & Ornamentation: Patchwork of pink, gold, and cream floral cotton prints; small round mirror (shisha) insets down the neck; orange and green pom-pom tassels at the ears and legs; blue glass beads on the leg tassels; a small brass bell at the throat.
- Structural Base: A printed cotton label on the underside reads “…COTTON HAND WOVEN MADE IN INDIA.”
