Description
Overview
A long ceremonial spoon hand-carved from a single piece of wood, incised “N. POPA” on the bowl back. The piece is consistent with the work of Nicolae (Neculai) Popa (1919–2010) of Târpești, Neamț County, Romania, a celebrated naive sculptor and founder of a village ethnographic museum. It likely dates to the late 20th century and comes from The Craft World Tours Collection, whose Romania itineraries included visits with Popa.
Design & Craftsmanship
- Function & Form: Decorative ceremonial or wall spoon, approximately 20″ long; oval bowl with notched rim; handle terminates in a bird- or serpent-form head whose open jaw forms a hook, likely for hanging.
- Artistry & Ornamentation: Eight-point rosette block above the bowl, a run of spiral chip-carved segments and a cross-hatched band; head with serrated crest and ringed eye with dark center. Deeply cut zigzag band inside the bowl echoes the rim; knife-faceted bowl back with zigzag border.
- Structural Base: “N. POPA” incised and underlined on the back of the bowl.
Condition Report
- Surface Condition: Natural unfinished wood with likely light handling wear; small dark mark near the eye on the underside of the head, likely a natural knot or handling mark. No chips observed.
- Structural Integrity: Appears stable and whole. This item is sold “as-is” with all associated patina and wear inherent to its age and history as part of the Craft World Tours Collection.
