Description
Overview
A long ceremonial spoon hand-carved from a single piece of wood, with a generous round bowl, incised “N. POPA” on the bowl back. The piece is consistent with the work of Nicolae (Neculai) Popa (1919–2010) of Târpești, Neamț County, Romania, a celebrated naive sculptor and founder of a village ethnographic museum. It likely dates to the late 20th century and comes from The Craft World Tours Collection, whose Romania itineraries included visits with Popa.
Design & Craftsmanship
- Function & Form: Decorative ceremonial or wall spoon, approximately 20″ long; large round bowl with pointed, notched rim; handle ends in an open-beaked bird-head finial forming a hook, likely for hanging.
- Artistry & Ornamentation: Eight-point rosette block above the bowl, spiral chip-carved handle segments with cross-hatched bands at each end; head with notched crest and ringed eye with dark center. Zigzag chip-carved band inside the bowl; knife-faceted bowl back.
- Structural Base: “N. POPA” incised above a curved line on the back of the bowl.
Condition Report
- Surface Condition: Natural unfinished wood with likely light handling wear; two small dark streaks on the bowl back, likely old stains or natural knots; a lighter patch on the crest above the eye, possibly a small old surface loss. No chips observed on the rim or beak.
- Structural Integrity: Appears stable and whole. This item is sold “as-is” with all associated patina and wear inherent to its age and history as part of the Craft World Tours Collection.
